About Us

Spectus ethos is that of innovation and quality, "Fix it" won't do, we want to be "the best". Spectus, with others pioneered "Suspended Flame Technology" and we were the first manufacturer (in 1969) to demonstrate low excess Oxygen burners, firing less than 2% excess air and recording outstanding flame quality on a power station unit generating 125 mWe at full load: In 1969 Spectus were the first manufacturer to patent and demonstrate "Self Cooling Tip shut-off Fuel Injection Systems" capable of years of service without deterioration, particularly, of the atomising components. Since that time Spectus burners have consistently recorded minimal levels of unburnt particulate emissions and eliminated the formation of acid smuts. In China Spectus has demonstrated significant NOX reduction without the need for expensive overburn technology and ductwork modifications, or the consequences of firing at sub-stoichiometric conditions. Since 1969 Spectus has developed its Flame Monitoring Systems through eleven Marks from phototubes to photocells, with sales in excess of 3000 units most are still in service. In 1978-80 in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, Spectus demonstrated a Digital Burner Management System with memory at a UK power station. More recently (2008) Spectus has collaborated with the University of Kent looking at monitoring flames generated from different fuels. Spectus were the first manufacturer to patent and introduce "Positive Mechanical Safety Interlocks", with automatic operation linked to the insertion and retraction of fuel injectors to and from the furnace. With an accumulated experience in combustion engineering of more than 150 years, Spectus engineers continue to innovate.

Bio:

David is a Chartered Engineer, a European Engineer and a Warwick MBA, he began his career as an Artificer Apprentice in the Royal Navy and fired up his first marine oil fired boiler in 1956 using the "U" tube technique. In 1960 David left the Royal Navy and joined Foster Wheeler as a Trainee Engineer, he graduated with an HN Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1963: David then transferred to R&D to work on nuclear submarines with Rolls Royce and Associates. Subsequently, he joined the Central Electricity Generating Board as a Research Engineer specialising in Combustion Engineering Research. In 1969 David joined Spectus where he has remained in various positions ever since.

Bio:

Mike is a Chartered Engineer, he began his career as a student apprentice with the CEGB, graduating from the University of Aston with honours in Electrical Engineering in 1962: He completed an HNC in Mechanical Engineering the following year. Mike was next appointed a Technical Development Engineer at Drakelow Power Station, where (in 1969) he successfully introduced tip shut-off oil light-up burners of the suspended flame type. Mike is "hands on" and even when promoted to CEGB management, he continued to be active in combustion engineering (coal and oil burners). In 1996 Mike joined Spectus as a combustion engineer and he continues to work for Spectus in that capacity.

Bio:

Richard is a graduate of Cardiff University with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering and he has completed a 2 year training programme at Spectus, gaining experience of power station practice and taking part in the management of Mechanical Engineering projects in UK power stations. Richard is particularly interested in project management, product development, fluid dynamics, and combustion science; he is currently involved in managing investigative projects in UK power stations.

Bio:

Simon joined Spectus in 1996 as an indentured apprentice and promptly started winning prizes at college in Reading. In 2000 Simon graduated with an HN Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and was transferred into Spectus design and draughting department. Simon has spent five years working at Ferrybridge, Fiddlers Ferry and Eggborough power stations gaining experience in combustion engineering, and he continues to work with Victor Lopes as a design Engineer; currently working on automatic safety interlocks.

Bio:

Chris is a Professional Electronics Engineer and he joined Spectus in 2003 taking over from David Innes to continue the development of our flame monitoring systems. Trevor Beazer

Bio:

Trevor is a Professional Accountant and qualified with Whitehills, where (in 1972) he first encountered Spectus as an Auditor. In 1981 Trevor was appointed by Spectus as a Non-Executive Director, and in 1989 he joined as a full time Executive Director. Trevor supervises all financial and accounting activities at Spectus, he is also responsible for Spectus quality management and accreditation procedures. Trevor takes a keen interest in engineering issues and strategic planning.

Victor Lopes

Experience:

20 years in Combustion Engineering, including 14 years with Spectus.

Bio:

Victor completed a time served apprenticeship in the manufacturing industry at the same time studying to obtain a Higher National Certificate in Engineering with design drafting endorsements. Victor has wide experience of both industrial and power station boilers and has worked with Spectus for 14 years he has recently been promoted to the position of Engineering Manager.

Bio:

John joined Spectus in 2002 as a Technician and he has many years of experience in the maintenance of electro mechanical equipment, which for the past 8 years he has brought to Spectus burners and flame monitoring equipment. John is part of our site support team and is well known for his enthusiasm and regard for our customers.

Adrian Dixon

Experience:

30 years in Electronics and Software Industries, including 5 years with Spectus.

Bio:

Adrian was educated at Newcastle University where he obtained an honours degree in electrical engineering, he has worked for Spectus for some five years in the recent past and he has extensive knowledge of Burner Management Systems (BMS). Adrian is a coded programmer with considerable expertise in Sil rating safety systems, and he is currently responsible for the design of digital BMS and software writing at Spectus.
